    Damn. He had to have been black-listed for that one. Though i wonder about the context. What film is this from? Is there no comedic context? I expect some irony. Something about how such words inspire folks to trust blindly and force the speaker to become emperor — a benevolent dictator for life.

    So much the easier to have no personal responsibility for making the world a better place.

    Better to have a savior.

    This comes from The Great Dictator (1940) which was apparently the first Hollywood movie to denounce Hitler directly. Seven years later, he was subpoenaed to appear before the House Un-American Activities Committee, but apparently never actually testified.

    I forgot. I haven’t seen the film, but I understand that this is the climax of the story, so I don’t expect a lot of comedic relief from the intensity of the statement. This was apparently quite sincere, though it would be interesting to see.
