You Gotta Know When to Hold ‘Em, Know When to Fold ‘Em…
Well, I just dropped off the letters that will start to rearrange the furniture of my life to reflect what’s going on inside. It was a bittersweet moment as I hesitated in front of the mailbox, still free to alter my course. With the flick of a wrist, the letters which will forever alter my relationship to the Mormon church dropped out of sight, and I became powerless to turn back.
I think I may carry the empty plastic cover where my temple recommend used to be as a talisman to evoke the wide freedom of self-determination rather than the limitations of unquestioning submission of my agency to the prescriptions of any other.
We lay aside the expectation of a particular result,
and do the right thing because it is right.
We do our duty, we stand and fight.
We do not do so without profound compassion for others.
(Krishna to Arjuna, Bhagavad Gita)
